Nachos are a favorite snack and can also be an entre in their own right. In this area, Simi Valley residents have some advantages. We have farmer’s markets, two produce stores and Dr. Novy’s Ranch Store offering fresh, healthy ingredients.
Dr. Novy’s store sells grass fed beef, which is high in Omega-3 fatty acids. The farmer’s markets offer grower to buyer direct. The farmer’s market used to be held on Wednesdays at the Town Center Mall, but has recently relocated to Tapo Canyon in the Regal Cinema Plaza on Friday’s.
Nacho Ingredients
½ lb lean ground beef (90-96% fat free)
½ onion, diced
1 small can of tomato sauce*
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp garlic powder
Olive oil spray or 1 tsp olive oil
Grated cheese
Tortilla chips
Black olives (optional)
For a nonstick pan, only the spray is required. If another sort of pan is used, the teaspoon of olive oil will help prevent sticking.
Heat skillet with oil and add onions. When they are translucent, add the burger. Cook, separating the meat into small pieces. When it’s done, add the tomato sauce and seasonings. Simmer the meat sauce until it is thick.
Putting it Together
Place tortilla chips on/in an oven proof dish. Spoon the meat over the tortilla chips, and then cover with cheese. Bake in a 350 degree oven until the cheese melts. Add the black olives and serve.
*This tomato sauce came pre-seasoned. If using regular tomato sauce, more spices may be required.
