Hot chocolate is a classic winter drink. Why resort to the powdered mix when you can easily make a delicious hot chocolate from scratch? It only takes a few minutes and the result will be well worth it. You will need:

1/4 cup of chocolate chips

2 tablespoons of high-quality cocoa powder

2 1/2 cups of milk (you can use skim, 2% or whole)

1 tablespoon of agave nectar

1/2 teaspoon of vanilla

Whipped cream (optional)

Chocolate shavings (optional)

In a medium saucepan, melt the chocolate chips over very low heat. Add the cocoa powder, milk and agave nectar and turn the heat to medium-low. Stir continuously to combine and keep the milk from burning. After the mixture has heated up, add the vanilla extract. Stir and remove from heat. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Serve immediately.

You can also add a variety of flavors to this hot chocolate recipe by adding 1/2 teaspoon of your choice of extract along with the vanilla. Try almond, hazelnut, or peppermint for a tasty change on an old favorite. If you are avoiding chocolate because of the caffeine, try a delicious white hot chocolate which is caffeine-free.
