Eastern guard talks next level

Eastern's Austin Howard was one of the top players in the 7th Region this past season. Now that his high school career is over, the 6-foot-2 guard is looking for a place to play in college. I caught up with Howard and spoke with him about his game and the next level.

Howard can score in a variety of ways, whether it's knocking down an open jumper or penetrating to the basket. However, his defense may be his best quality. Howard often guarded the opposing team's best player and more time then not, did an excellent job of holding that player below his average.

"I really just do whatever my coach needs me to do," Howard said. "Whether it's guarding one of the other team's better players or whether it's going out and scoring a bucket. If my team needs a steal, then I go out and pick up a steal. If I need to hit a big three, I'll do that. I do whatever it takes for my team to win."

Howard is waiting for his first scholarship offer but a few schools across the state have been in contact.

"Transylvania has contacted me a lot," Howard said. "Spalding has contacted as well but I should start hearing from a lot more schools in a couple months. I'm going to try and get out an expose myself more. I'm going to go out and do some workouts and stuff and see what I can do to make myself better."

Howard helped lead the Eagles to a 20-9 record this past season.
