Last Easter holiday I was surprised to say the least when my wife suggested that we spend a weekend in Wilmington, DE. My parents had offered to take the kids away for a few days and we had a pass to do whatever we liked, so when my wife booked Wilmington I thought she might have made a mistake. I had visions of spending our hard earned time away in a desolate and rundown town where nothing of any note ever happens. Luckily for us my wife is far better at judging a vacation destination than I am because we had a wonderful time.
The City of Wilmington, DE has seen a lot of improvements over recent times and the place is significantly better than I had expected. The Riverfront area of the city was testament to what can be created with the right amount of hard work and belief. It was a stunning place with restaurants and bars and wonderfully organized walkways and tours. As the spring Easter weather was absolutely beautiful so was our time spent down by the river, it was so good, in fact, that we found it hard to drag ourselves away. But we had more to do and other things to see.
Sticking with the outdoor theme we took a trip to the Winterthur in Spring Exhibition at the Winterthur Museum, Gardens and Library. The museum itself boasted lots of American art that dated back for over 300 years but we went for the gardens, which were in their fullest glory at this time of the year. Tram rides took us around and narration helped us get a feel of the place. It was a great way to spend an afternoon.
For our evening entertainment we took in some Jazz at the Basil Bar and Grill, which was as good as we have seen and at a very reasonable price. And this seemed to be the theme throughout our stay. No matter what we did we didn’t spend as much as we expected to.
The night at the Baseball was terrific, okay so it might not be premier standard play but the crowds are good and friendly and the admission fee is a fraction of what many other teams charge. Everything considered we couldn’t fault a thing.
Our hotel was incredibly clean and the service was wonderful, located towards the middle of town it was easy to find our way around. We had a perfect time and I was, once again, proven wrong about my assumptions of places that I have never visited. So much so that I decided then and there to make a decision of my own and one that I knew we would all agree upon.
This year we are once again visiting Wilmington, DE for an Easter Vacation. We are going for a full week and we are taking the kids. I have booked the same hotel and have read up on Riverboat cruises and watercolor painting classes. Everything is booked and the whole family cannot wait for our Easter vacation in Wilmington, DE.
If you got tempted by the idea of spending your Easter vacation in Wilmington I strongly recommend you to book your flight tickets (in Swedish flygresor) as soon as possible if you want to catch good flight deals.
