Town Ark provides weekly meals for nearly 250 children in seven elementary schools and middle schools and two high schools in East Pasco. Zephyrhills has 27 students who benefit and Pasco High has about 20 who receive backpacks on Fridays that contain three meals and snacks.
At the end of August, Diana Thomas has supervised the program that fills backpacks for undernourished children in the area.
Every student that qualifies for the program is given a backpack on Friday and every week afterwards the child’s backpack is restocked with the meals and snacks.
The Ark is currently filling 220 to 230 backpacks every week, as well as stocking the high school food pantries operating to provide for our students who need this community support effort.
Thomas and the volunteers put a lot of time into this project all week long to make it work.
On Monday and Tuesday, students bring back their empty backpacks to school so that the Ark can pick them up on Wednesday. Volunteers then fill the packs on Wednesday and Thursday for the students to pick back up on Friday.
This program is possible through the Thomas Promise Foundation that was founded by Wade Thomas, Diana’s husband, and several of our local businessmen.
The Ark appreciates volunteers able to donate time and/or materials to help its program keep up with the growing demand of inventory and its distribution.
A non-profit group, The Ark accepts gently used clothing, shoes, school supplies, as well as monetary donations that can be delivered or mailed to 4542 Gall Blvd., Zephyrhills, FL. 33542. Call them at (813)-782-0000 Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
