Overhead the parking spaces in the detention center lot at the East Mesa Detention Facility on Alta Road, thousands of solar panels are on. The Sheriff's Department that runs the facility turned on the 1 megawatt energy system.
Construction that started in Summer was done as planned.
Light energy will support inmate activities and facility operations for 20 years.
Sun Edison has a power purchase agreement that was approved by the County Board of Supervisors. The company built the parking lot solar system at no cost to the county. The county just has to live up to their side of the bargain and use the energy they pay for during the twenty years the agreement lasts.
The medium security facility near the border crossing that houses both adult inmates and youth at the juveinile detention facility now has one of the largest solar roof energy systems in the county. County work on installing phovoltaic panels that produce less greenhouse gases during enegy production has been ongoing.
The panels are installed on roofs that sit on steel canopies and cover the carports. Parkers will get shade from the panels.
