A few weeks ago, the finalists for the East Coast Wine Geeks 2012 wine of the year were announced. Last Saturday, the winners were decided in a blind tasting by our esteemed panel of judges. Here are the wines that they liked best and why.
3rd Runner up: Kavic Chardonnay
The judges sad that the Kavic Chardonnay was “clear, bright and light straw in color”. They described the nose as “faint peach, yellow apple and apricot”, “woodsy”, and “floral”. The wine had flavors of pear, that were “very well balanced for a nice all around wine with no aftertaste”.The judges said overall, the wine was “nice for after dinner or after anything” and “well made, with no flaws and medium complexity”. 2nd Runner up: Bagg Dare Winery’s Poor Limp Richard
Poor Limp Richard is described as “light golden” in color and “clear and appealing”. It has aromas of “ripe pineapple and golden apple”, “fruity”, and “maybe a little paint”. About the taste, the judges said it was “sweet with ripe pineapple” , “a pleasant flavor, I would like it with a turkey burger” and “purdy”. Overall the judges thought it was “the best of the whites” and “well made and lively”. First Place winner: Apothic Red
The Apothic red had a “great deep red color” which everyone described as “pretty”. The aromas were described by the judges as “peppery and robust” and “blueberry and blackberry”. It had a “peppery taste, acidic with a very pleasant finish” and was described as “slightly earthy” with “moderate complexity, finish and acidy” and “dark berry/cherry with light oak”. Overall, our judges said “I thought the total package was very good” and “was well balanced with a nice finish” Apothic red is available at PA wine and spirits stores.
Listener’s Choice: Thistlethwaite Farmhouse Red
The Farmhouse Red blend from Thistlethwaite won the Listener’s choice award. receiving 40% of the online votes from our listeners. Farmhouse Red is available at Thistlethwaite Vineyard in Jefferson, PA.
