Here come the All Star Articles.
This year I expanded the number of regions I covered, started earlier and offered more votes to individuals (all things that had been requested by several people last year). The result? Less people voted and more ties occurred.
This year, I stated very clearly that if there were not a minimum number of votes accumulated, I would not do a full set of articles for that region. Three regions will be getting shortened versions of the all star articles as a result.
Then, what to do with the ties? In most regions there were five or more people tied for the last two to 6 slots on an all-star ‘roster’. So I did a second set of voting to break the ties. I found myself with a conundrum:
Do I recognize the people who had enough votes to make the tie, even though they were not in the top [insert number] of that region? Do I drop them off the list like they didn’t make it at all?
I decided to do this “Up and Coming” team. This is the team of skaters who had enough votes to get them into the tie breaking session, but not quite enough to get them into the top 20 for their region – and we all know that you have to be in the top 20 to make a charter! Congrats to all of these skaters for being recognized in the top of their region and watch out for them in 2014.
Lexacution – Salisbury Roller Girls (Mid-Atlantic Region) – Fast feet and quick thinking, this girl earned a spot on the Maryland All-Stars.
Buenos D. A$$ – Brandywine Roller Girls (Pennsylvania Region) – There is a reason she took the name she did and it has gotten her a spot on the PA All-Star team.
Charlotte Bupowski – Suburbia Roller Derby (New York/New Jersey Region) – She may look small and timid but she has a fierceness on the track.
Buck U – Vermont Men’s Roller Derby (New England North Region) – Being a goof off the track doesn’t mean he won’t take you to the ground when you’re trying to get by him.
Kitty Roadkill – Chemical Valley Rollergirls (Virginias Region) – She has a nimbleness to her wheels and can squeeze past tough opponents.
Maya Mangleyou – Boston Derby Dames (New England South) – Jammer? Yes. Blocker? Yes. Do you have a chance? Not really.
Rollomite – Shove City/Keystone State Rollin’ Renegades (Pennsylvania) – He eats apexes for breakfast and don’t even try to outrun him.
Parker Poison – CT Rollergirls (New England South) – A top blocker for CT, she is the last one you want to be blindsided by (but you will be).
Whippi Gone Stalking – Key City Rollers (Mid-Atlantic) – Her long legs will take her by you faster than you thought and when she’s blocking, she will trap you with them. The Maryland All-Stars are happy to have her.
Jen Ittles – Jewel City Rollergirls (Virginias) – Agile and always looking for the inside line, Jen is a formidable jammer that just blew right past you.
Craisy Dukes – Boston Derby Dames (New England South) – New to Boston, she won’t let you leave the track without remembering her name and the feel of her shoulder in your ribs.
Tri Scare-A-Tops – Maine Roller Derby (New England North) – Don’t get stuck in her positional blocking death ray, there is no hope if you do.
Berry Boom Boom – Long Island Roller Rebels (New York/New Jersey) – I’m not quite sure what her face looks like since all the pictures were of her demolishing opponents while looking them in the eye.
Amy McClure – Greenbrier Roller Vixens (Virginias) – A jack of all trades, she keeps you guessing with the next trick in her skates; it earned her a spot on the West Virginia All Stars
Mercury – Penn Jersey She Devils (Pennsylvania) – Aggressive unlike others, don’t let her catch you on the inside line of the bank: you’ll be eating concrete as she flies by you.
C Mya Rage – CT Rollergirls (New England South) – She’ll smash you to the ground and you’ll like every moment of it. Unless she’s wearing the star; then you’ll just be mad you can’t stop her.
Kissy Kicks – Maine Roller Derby (New England North) – Able to take up half of the track with her positional blocking, Kissy is a key to the walls of Maine.
Yankee Scandal – DC Rollergirls (Mid-Atlantic) – Not quite sure if she’s human based on the speed and ability she has to get through tight packs.
Raggedy Annuerysm – Dutchland Derby Rollers (Pennsylvania) – Pretty sure she’s made of rubber; watching Rags jam will blow your mind watching her block will make you giddy. The PA All-Stars are lucky to have her.
Gunder N Lightening – Ithaca League of Women Rollers (New York/New Jersey) – Strong of mind and legs, Gunder is one of the best in derby and it’s why she made the New York All-Stars.
