Magic Johnson and his wife Cookie are proud of their son Earvin “EJ” Johnson III, who has quietly gone public with his boyfriend. The couple was spotted hand in hand for date night on the Sunset Strip. EJ told TMZ cameras that he is “hoping and praying” for his dad’s team the Los Angeles Dodgers this year.
Earvin Johnson III has never made his sexual preference public, and on Tuesday April 2, TMZ reported that Magic and Cookie Johnson “love EJ and support him in every way. We’re very proud of him.” The Johnson’s enjoy a very close relationship with their son and often travel to New York City to visit EJ, a student at NYU.
Magic and Cookie Johnson, who have been married since 1991, have a daughter Elisa, 18, and Magic has a son, Andre, 21, from a previous relationship. The former LA Laker, who is now a co-owner of the LA Dodgers franchise, announced that he had HIV in 1991 at a time when there were very few HIV-positive heterosexuals in the world. At the time of his announcement there was much speculation as to whether the basketball legend may be gay or bisexual.
In 2011 Johnson, a longtime ally of the LGBT community said, “Homophobia is still an issue everywhere, but especially in the black community.” Magic also has been vocal regarding repealing Proposition 8, the same-sex marriage ban in California.
