The Earthquakes came out on top of Group 6 by virtue of goal differential with two home victories but losing both of their road games. They lost 1-0 contests against the Montreal Impact and the Guatemalan club Heredia on the road, but they kept their hopes alive by winning at home 3-0 against Montreal on September, 17 2013 and a thrilling 1-0 victory over Heredia on October 23, 2013 to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Earthquakes look to extend their 19-game home unbeaten streak against Toluca. The second leg of the match will be on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Nemesio Diez Stadium in Toluca, Mexico.

San Jose will host Real Salt Lake on Saturday, March 15, 2014 to open their 2014 Major League Soccer season.
