Several dozen residents of Cedar City, Utah reported feeling a mild earthquake Feb. 7 at 12:02 p.m. PST/1:02 p.m. MST, the U.S. Geological Survey announced in an emailed alert.
The earthquake was reported to be at a magnitude of 3.5, with the epicenter located at 37.799N 113.153W. The location is about seven miles west-northwest of Enoch, nine miles north-northwest of Cedar City, 18 miles north of Kanarraville, 76 miles east of of Caliente, Nev. and 159 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
The quake was believed to be about a half-mile beneath the surface.
No damage was reported or expected.
The epicenter is located near the Washington Fault.
"The Hurricane and Washington faults, which are less active than the Wasatch fault in northern Utah, generate surface-faulting earthquakes on average once every several thousand to tens of thousands of years," according to the Utah Geological Survey.
"In Washington County, the plateaus east of the Hurricane Cliffs move up along the Hurricane fault zone relative to the downward movement of the cities of La Verkin and Hurricane on the west side of the fault zone."
