Earthquake rumbles in Central California

A small earthquake was felt in at least six zip code areas in Central California, the U.S. Geological Survey reported Thursday.

The earthquake was recorded at 1:04 p.m. at 36.564N 121.069W; or five miles east-northeast of Pinnacles, 17 miles east-northeast of Soledad, 19 miles north-northeast of Greenfield, 25 miles north of King City, and 70 miles southeast of San Jose City Hall.

The quake was believe to be about four miles beneath the surface at a magnitude of 3.5.

No damages were reported or expected.

Pinnacles is in the Salinas Valley. The Pinnacles National Monument is located there. It consists of the remnants of an extinct volcano.

Soledad is in Monterey County. It has a firm place in California history, being the location of Soledad Prison, and is also the area that served as an inspiration to John Steinbeck when he wrote “Of Mice and Men.”

Earthquakes are common in the area, which is along the San Andreas Fault.
