Earthquake relief: Beauty companies mobilize to aid Japan

In the month following the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit northern Japan on March 11th, 2011, many businesses, including cosmetics companies, pledged money and products to aid our friends overseas. Making a personal contribution to Japan relief efforts is as simple as choosing to support companies who have dedicated themselves to this cause.

On Friday, April 8th, 2011, from 12pm to 5pm PST, Los Angeles based NYX cosmetics will donate 100% of their profits from online sales to the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief fund. This effort is spearheaded by NYX creative department employee Ai Yoshida, who has family in Japan.

Mark your calendar and visit the NYX cosmetics website to contribute.

If you are looking for a new face wash, Mirai Clinical, a newly launched Japanese skin care line, announced mid-March that they have set up a charitable fund through the American Red Cross which will receive 10% of Mirai’s sales sold via the Mirai Clinical website, through December 31, 2011.

Mirai looks forward to assisting the restoration of earthquake and tsunami stricken areas, not only because its founder, Koko Hayashi has personal ties to Japan, but also because one of Mirai’s own factories is located in the Gunma Perfecture, an area hit by the tsunami. “We await their recovery, it’s important for us to support such damaged local business,” said Hayashi.

Sanrio Inc., the American arm of Sanrio Co. Ltd, is following up their March 31st, “Day of Donation” fundraiser with “Hello Japan,” a line of products created solely to support relief efforts. Sanrio entered the cosmetic market in 2008 by collaborating  on a capsule color line with MAC cosmetics and has subsequently launched a Hello Kitty brand makeup line this January.

Featuring popular cartoon cat Hello Kitty, all Hello Japan products were developed in collaboration with various Sanrio licensees who have agreed to contribute all net proceeds to the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief fund. The line includes an adorable tote, perfect for stowing all your beauty needs. Find the Hello Japan tote bag at select Sanrio stores and on Loungefly.com beginning in mid-April.

Other cosmetics and skincare companies who have pledged aid contributions to Japan include: Loreal, Proctor & Gamble (parent company of Oil of Olay, Herbal Essences, SK-II, Pantene, Max Factor, Cover Girl and Clairol), Amway and Temptu.

Said best by Michael Benjamin, CEO of Temptu, “This is a global crisis that needs help from all sectors”-- it’s good to see that so many other beauty companies agree.
