Earthquake alarm

Most San Diegans spend a shaky Easter Sunday this year. The  7.2 earthquake that hit Celexico was clearly felt in San Diego and across most of the Southern Californian coastline.

So far this week,  900 aftershocks -- some as large as 5.2 on the Richter Scale -- have continued rocking San Diego and its surrounding areas.

Of course, earthquakes are nothing new to Southern Californians. They happen all the time. What made this one worrying -- other than the fact that we might be getting ready for the Big One, the ultimate popping of the San Andreas Fault -- is its timing with regards to recent, worldwide earthquakes. Since January, huge quakes have hit Haiti, Chile, Turkey, Philippines, Indonesia, California . . . No wonder all the news stations tell us to be prepared for quakes.

But are we ready for what those quakes might be telling us -- that Jesus is coming soon? The Bible teaches that earthquakes will increase in diverse places prior to Christ's return (Matthew 24 & Luke 21). We need to be ready not just for quakes but for Him. Are our lives built on a secure foundation?

The earthquake that devastated Haiti this January was less powerful than the one that rattled San Diego. Yet Port-au-Prince was destroyed. This is due to foundations -- or lack thereof. Haiti's buildings were not constructed on a firm foundation. Edifices in San Diego, on the other hand, are. Foundation is key -- not just for earthquakes but for our lives. Check out Matthew 7 to see what Jesus said about foundations.

So last Easter it was l'Aquila in Italy that was struck by a huge quake; this year Southern California.  I wonder where it will be next year? Are you ready?
