Earthing is a phenomenon grounded in ancient tradition that some modern alternative medicine luminaries such as Dr. Joseph Mercola and Dr. Stephen Sinatra are now promoting as a simple and powerful resource for reclaiming our health. According to Dr. Sinatra and co-authors Gaetan Chevalier and Pawel Sokal, this is something related to basic scientific facts about our relationship with the planetary environment:
"Modern lifestyle separates humans from such contact. The research suggests that this disconnect may be a major contributor to physiological dysfunction and unwellness. Reconnection with the Earth's electrons has been found to promote intriguing physiological changes and subjective reports of well-being. Earthing (or grounding) refers to the discovery of benefits—including better sleep and reduced pain—from walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, or sleeping indoors connected to conductive systems that transfer the Earth's electrons from the ground into the body.
Omnipresent throughout the environment is a surprisingly beneficial, yet overlooked global resource for health maintenance, disease prevention, and clinical therapy: the surface of the Earth itself. It is an established, though not widely appreciated fact, that the Earth's surface possesses a limitless and continuously renewed supply of free or mobile electrons. The surface of the planet is electrically conductive (except in limited ultradry areas such as deserts), and its negative potential is maintained (i.e., its electron supply replenished) by the global atmospheric electrical circuit."
Studies of this Earthing phenomenon have shown benefits such as improved sleep, pain relief, reduced stress, and improved mood. Grounding appears to also help protect the body from effects of external man-made electrical fields. With our modern lifestyle bombarding us with the man-made fields we may have a greater need than ever for grounding ourselves to the Earth. For those who aren't able to conveniently connect with the Earth there are now a number of products designed to help facilitate this connection, such as grounding mats and shoes.
In a recent documentary film Grounded, it is shown how the introduction of grounding transformed an entire town in Alaska and inspired a visit from famed NASA Apollo astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell. Of course, you don't have to go to Alaska to discover the benefits of grounding - just step outside barefoot with your feet on the Earth!
