Earth Hour promotes environmental awareness and personal action

Earth Hour will be celebrated this year on March 27th at 8:30 PM. This means that everyone around the world is turning off all their lights for one hour, at the same time. The website states, "the movement symbolizes that by working together, each of us can make a positive impact in this fight, protecting our future and that of future generations."

Kentucky is already an official Earth Hour 2010 state and one of the best ways to show our support is by motivating youth to take action. There's an Earth Hour Kids website with games, information on climate change and animal life as well as ideas to get your child involved in environmental protection.

Fun Challenge: throw an environmentally friendly Earth Hour party! Include your kids in the planning and preparation because they'll have a lot of great ideas for keeping it green.

Examples to get you started:

-live music (no plugged in electronics)

-finger food (forget the paper plates!)

-keep the candles burning well past the allotted hour

-guests must ride or walk to your party

-provide cloth napkins and a big recycling bin for pop cans
