Earth friendly wines to help you celebrate Earth Day

April 22 the world celebrates Earth Day. People are encouraged to participate in events that show respect to Mother Earth. Cleaning parks and beaches and planting trees are all things people do to celebrate this day.
Chile’s Conch Y Toro winery practice environmental appreciation every day of the year. Among the winery’s conservation practices are water management, saving up to 25% fresh water across its vineyards. Being large landholders they also manage forestlands surrounding their vineyards and avoid over planting vines and preserve natural surroundings. One important step in shrinking one’s carbon footprint is to lighten the load that must be carried. Conch Y Toro is a worldwide brand and ships its wines to many different nations. They have reduced the weight of their bottles by 25%, which helps lower fuel emissions for transporting their wines. Here are two great wines to help celebrate this year’s upcoming Earth Day.
Concha Y Toro Reserva Serie Riberas, Gran Reserva, Chardonnay, Colchagua Valley, 2012 is bright golden yellow in the glass. The aromas of lemon, wild flowers, green delicious apples first tempt the senses. The palate is filled with Granny Smith apples, lemon minerals and a pleasant tart acidity. The Concha Y Tora Serie Riberas, “Rivera Bank Series,” are special vineyards that are grown next to natural rivers formed by snow runoff from the Andes. These mineral rich rivers get into the soil of the vineyards and infuse the roots with their rich flavors. Enjoy this wine with grilled fish and chicken with citrus marinades and plenty of grilled veggies on the side.
Conch Y Toro, Casillero Del Diablo, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2012 has a rich deep purple color. The aromas are red berries, cassis with earthiness, toasted oak with notes of graphite in the background. The palate is filled with big fruit, including tart red berries, smooth tannins, nice acidity and a medium finish. Grill up some rib eye steaks and mushrooms in olive oil and herbs to eat with wine and toast to Mother Earth.
It is a good felling to take care of the earth and drink earth friendly wines. Taking care of our world has to start somewhere. This is a good start.
