Every year, after the snow melts in the Capital Region, all of the trash that had been hidden becomes a terrible eyesore. Take a look at the side of almost any road in the area and you can see soda and beer cans on the ground, empty snack bags in ditches or plastic shopping bags knotted in trees.
One way that runners can make a difference on Earth Day -- and every day -- is to do their part to clean up the trash that litters the roadways, trails and other routes that we run.
Here are some tips to help you get started:
- Carry a bag with you when you run so you can pick up trash along your route and dispose of it properly when you are done.
- Don't be part of the problem: Always be sure that you throw your gel packs out in the trash -- not on the ground.
- Carry reusable water bottles.
- Participate in group clean up days, such as those hosted by the HMRRC or other organizations. Or, organize your own!
