Earth Day 2011: Events in Atlanta for the entire family

Earth Day 2011 is April 22nd and there are plenty of events in Atlanta to celebrate the annual holiday. From a 3-day celebration at the Georgia Aquarium to a day exploring the Chattahoochee Nature Center, there’s something for the entire family to enjoy in Atlanta for Earth Day 2011.

Below are a few family-friendly Earth Day events happening in and around Atlanta:

  • Earth Day at Georgia Aquarium: The 3-day celebration happens April 22nd-24th and is designed to inspire awareness and gratitude by exposing visitors to the wonders of our Earth. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about what they can do to help protect the planet and promote conservation of the environment, as well as learn about eco-friendly products and partners in the eco-friendly partner pavilion. Fun events and giveaways, such as a green scavenger hunt and mascot interactions, will be available throughout the day. Additional activities include arts & crafts stations for kids, special giveaways and much more.
  • Earth Day at Georgia Tech: Friday, April 22nd from 10 am-2 pm. With an annual participation of more than 3,000 people, this is one of the largest Earth Day celebrations in the southeast. The event is free and open to the public, and features 70 exhibitors, eco-friendly giveaways, recycling opportunities, a clothing swap, an office supply exchange, live music, and organic popcorn. The theme this year is "What it Means to Be Green."
  • Atlantic Station Earth Day Celebration: Friday, April 22nd from 11 am - 4 pm. Enjoy live entertainment and an eco-friendly fashion show. Experience the Coca-Cola Rev (recycling education vehicle) and visit Farmer Del for all your spring planting needs. Construct a water barrel and shop the marketplace. There’s something for everyone.
  • The Chattahoochee Nature Center in Rowell is a great place to celebrate Earth Day 2011. Located at 9135 Willeo Rd., it features miles of walking trails and a hands-on Discovery Museum where children can explore conservation in a fun, engaging and educational way.

For more information about going green every day of the year, I highly recommend Tara Wellington’s book titled The Mom's Guide to Growing Your Family Green: Saving the Earth Begins at Home. With the multitude of green choices available, the author advises moms on how to determine what will be best for their families—and the environment.

This user-friendly and invaluable resource is packed with hundreds of easy green how-tos including:

  • Shopping: Get the most bang for your buck by purchasing organic foods that would otherwise have high pesticide residue, like apples, grapes, green peppers, peaches, and pears.
  • Kitchen: Save money and water by scraping - not rinsing - dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. Today’s models are so efficient that rinsing is not necessary.
  • Home office: Screensavers don’t save energy. Instead have the computer switch to sleep mode when idle.
