Early voting ends today in Reno in the special election to fill Dean Heller's seat in Congress, and Republicans are encouraged by the turnout, as well as surprising media support.
Since early voting began, Republicans have shown up to vote in numbers that far outpaced Democrats, a stat that could bode well for conservative Republican Mark Amodei, who hopes to win the open Congressional seat in CD-2. Certainly it hasn't hurt that Reno's otherwise liberal newspaper, the Reno Gazette Journal, recently endorsed Amodei over the Democratic opponent, NV State Treasurer Kate Marshall.
Marshall has the backing of Obama and Reid, as well as Reid's tremendous fundraising and get-out-the-vote organization, yet early voting shows a clear bias towards Republican voters, as one might expect in this largely red region.
While Reno's far left weekly rag, the Reno News and Review, officially endorsed Marshall, they ran a conservative column supporting Amodei over Marshall (which Amodei's Facebook page erroneously reported as an endorsement).
Marshall has clearly out fund-raised Amodei, and she has inundated the airwaves with campaign ads, but it may not be enough. She has tried to cast herself as a fiscal conservative and a moderate, which reportedly alienated Marshall’s Democrat fans. Her campaign also suffers from oddly-missing funding from the national Democratic Party, which may indicate they think she can’t win.
If you have not yet voted, please remember to vote Tuesday, September 13th.
