This week begins early voting in this year's primary election here in the state of Georgia. Monday April 18th is the exact date. Eearly voting lasts from April 28th to May 16th. The primary is to be held on Tuesday May 20th. In the state of Georgia people do not register as a member of a political party. Voters do declare a party at the polling location in primary elections. At that time voters are given a ballot with only the candidates in the party selected. This means Georgia does not have an open primary process. For example, in the primary one cannot vote for a Democrat in the Senate race and a Republican in the Governor's race. One must decide in advance whether to select from only the Democratic candidates or only the Republican candidates. Selecting independent limits the voter to independent candidates.
To find out about polling times and locations got to the Georgia Secretary of State's website at www.sos.ga.gov. Currently the website isn't working properly, but hopefully as it is time for early voting, they will remedy that. Also call the local Board of Elections for the same information. Remember to bring valid state issued identification to the polling location. The General election is to be held on November 4, 2014. The last day to register to vote in the general election is October 3, 2014.
