Early Texas marriage records now on CD

Local genealogists now have more access to early marriage records. The Fort Worth Genealogical Society has compiled thousands of pages of documents for the “Collection of Early Marriage Records of Texas.”

This CD-ROM contains three publications from the Fort Worth Genealogical Society.

1. The Marion Day Mullins Collection of Early Texas Marriage Records
This 9,569 page collection of 60 e-books contains more than 116,000 marriage records from 56 Texas counties. Each book contains its own index, with an All County Master Index. This was published and sold by the Society for many years, but it was made available only on microfilm and microfiche until now.
2. Marriage Records of Early Texas 1824 - 1846
This is the republication of an out-of-print book which contains every known marriage record that survives from the Republic of Texas era. This 170-page book was published by the Society in two printings in 1970 and 1980.
3. The Footprints Collection of Texas Marriage Records
This 1,556 page e-book is a republication of all Texas marriage records that have been printed in the FWGS quarterly journal, “Footprints,” and its predecessor, the “Bulletin.” Records originate from 20 counties, some containing as few as one or two pages of information and others having as much as 80 to 200 pages.

More details about the documents on the CD are on the marriage CD section of the FWGS website.

Rob Yoder spearheaded this project and said it is unique in its scope.

“I don’t know of any other collection this size being made available to the public,” he said. I’ve been told that Ancestry.com doesn’t have this much on Texas marriages.”

Copies of the CD are now available.

To mail-order a copy of the CD you can visit the Fort Worth Genealogical Society website and click on the “Texas Marriage Collection” icon. Genealogists may purchase the CD in person during the FWGS monthly general membership meetings.

The meetings are open to the public and are held at 6:30 p.m. on the last Tuesday of the month (except December) in the Tandy Lecture Hall in the Fort Worth Library, 500 West 3rd Street. The FWGS is not able to accept credit cards.

Yoder said this publication is not available in print.

“The marriage collection is available only on CD-ROM,” he said. “If we were to print it as a book, it would contain 11,295 pages. Our largest book is 671 pages and 2 1/8 inches thick.  The marriage collection would require 17 volumes. At that size it would require 36 inches of shelf space. I estimate that the price would be between $800 and $900 per set in printed format.”

Yoder said it took the dedication of many people to bring this project to life.

“I worked on this project for 4 1/2 years with the assistance of more than 50 volunteers. I couldn’t have done it without their help.”
