Early season winter storm to whiten Deep South

An early season winter storm will drop some heavy accumulating snow across parts of the Deep South tonight into Tuesday, with up to 5 inches possible in some of the higher terrain of northeast Alabama and 1 to 3 inches possible across a large area including western Kentucky, Tennessee, southeastern Missouri, northern Mississippi, northeastern Arkansas, and the rest of northern Alabama.

Dynamic cooling on the backside of a strengthening upper level low will change rain over to snow later today with most accumulations occurring on grassy surfaces, but a few areas could see a slushy mess of slop on the roadways after dark.

Winter storm watches and winter weather advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service in anticipation of the snowy scenario unfolding, which is the earliest snow on record for some cities in the Tennessee Valley.

As the system pulls northward on Tuesday night, wet snow could even develop in the higher terrain of the central and southern Appalachians, and then further north into the eastern Great Lakes on Wednesday where several inches of snow are expected.
