Although firecrackers and fireworks are illegal in the Tacoma city limits, many people in the are started setting them off last night at 10 p. m. If you’re a pet owner you know how the firecrackers, noise makers, fireworks and parties can cause your pet panic. However, if you live near South 64th Street and South Tacoma Way, you heard more than just people celebrating at 4 a.m. this 1st day of January, 2013 and for many people in the neighborhood it frightened them and their pets.
As though the illegal fireworks displays were not enough to bring in 2013 and cause panic for many cats, dogs and in my house even my rabbit was upset by it all, a 4 a.m. explosion in the neighborhood of South 64th Street and South Tacoma Way was not part of the celebration. The loud boom that brought many people out of their beds in shock, if they had made it to bed yet, was actually a blown transformer.
One can only imagine what that must have sounded like after the hours of fireworks and firecrackers in celebration of the new year, maybe like someone had gone too far or that something horrible had happened. Its no surprise that several people in the area called the police department and the Tacoma police did confirm that the cause of the extra ruckus was the transformer. Thankfully there were no reports of injuries or fires as a result of the transformer and its not yet fully clear how the power has been affected in the area.
Most of Tacoma has brought this year in with a bang, some neighborhoods more than others, and we as pet owners can use this night as a reminder that the Forth of July celebrations will be similar and will be here in 7 months. These loud celebrations can frighten pets and they may not understand what’s going on. If your pet has gone missing due to the celebrations last night start looking for it right away. Every moment you don’t look is a moment that they could become more and more lost. Start by searching around your home and then your neighborhood, also check with the Humane Society and other shelters in the area.
