Club Tijuana took an early lead and held their ground against CD Victoria at the Ceibeño stadium in Honduras in their second group stage game of the CONCACAF Champions League. Xolos defeated Victoria 3-2 in their second game of the competition. Xoloitzcuintles take over the group with 4 points after their scoreless draw in El Salvador in game 1.
American Paul Arriola his second goal in two games. The Chula Vista, Calif. native connected with Aldo Polo in the 10th minute of play to put the ball in the net early in the game. Arriola has been a great addition to the Xolos lineup moving into the first team quickly.
The game turned into a midfield battle with both teams taking shots at each other and referee constantly stopping the ball for fouls. In the 39th minute the Aztec dogs pierced goalkeeper John Bodden’s net once more. This time Polo set up Diego Olsina put the game 2-0 in the Mexican side’s favor.
The Hondurans closed the gap in the 47th minute of play after Oliver Joseph Ortiz committed a foul inside the penalty area. The referee quickly pointed to the spot. Wilmer Cristiano shot and beat goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo for the 2-1.
The game returned to the midfield with the Honduran side once again committing a large amount of fouls. Despite the amount of legs being kicked no player was sent off and the referee awarded only one yellow card per team.
Xolos increased their lead with a goal from Argentine Cristian Pellerano in the 68th minute. Pellerano got the ball in the center field and fired from outside the half-moon to beat Bodden once more for the 3-1.
The local squad was able to muster a final goal in the 86th minute of play after a loss of concentration from the rojinegros. Fredixon Elvir shot from what is essentially the penalty spot to close the gap. Xolos earn a valuable victory in Honduras.
The victory puts Xolos in command of group 7 with 4 points. The Aztec dogs drew 0-0 against CD L.A. Firpo in El Salvador. Xolos will play their next game against L.A. Firpo on August 28, 2013 at the Caliente stadium. Victoria will travel to the Cuscatlán on Sept. 19, 2013 for their next Champions League game.
