It appears the Broadway space being vacated in Troy by the Broadway Brew Biergarten won't stay vacant for long.
Developer Sonny Bonacio, a partner in the purchase of the Keenan Building at Broadway and Third Street that is home to the controversial tavern, would not identify the new restaurant tenant but did say it would be announced within the next few weeks.
He did say it would be "more of an early-evening dining establishment" as opposed to the "late night bar that didn't fit the vision of a walkable downtown that we had."
Bonacio's remarks came Friday during an official ribbon-cutting for the totally renovated Keenan Building that now contains 14 high-end apartments and four separate street-level retail spaces, one of which will house the restaurant.
He and partner Mark Haworth bought the 1882 structure last year, and had it gutted and refitted to accommodate its new use. Since that purchase, Bonacio, known primarily as a Saratoga Springs developer, has quickly become a major figure on the Troy redevelopment scene by purchasing the River Triangle, Duchy and Cinema Arts buildings.
Kareem Jandali is in the process of liquidating his Broadway Brew Biergarten, a second iteration of a business once closed by the city as a public nuisance. He has complained publicly and online about what he calls poor treatment by the city, citing "corruption" without ever mentioning anything specific.
