"The 5th Annual Lung Hill Run" is Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the Liberty Memorial, 100 West 26th Street, Kansas City, Missouri. Lung Hill Run is a 5K timed run and untimed walk to raise money for critical lung cancer research. An optional .5-mile course will also be available.

The organizers of the Lung Hill Run have partnered with LUNGevity to donate all funds raised toward research and support for lung cancer patients and their families.

LUNGevity Foundation is the largest lung cancer-focused private funder of research in the United States. They connect people to lung cancer survivorship through research, education and support.

LUNGevity, the foundation, was founded in 2001 by seven incredible individuals after each of them had been diagnosed with lung cancer. It was their vision and passion for finding a cure that resulted in LUNGevity’s phenomenal growth. From a small Chicago-born organization to the nation’s fastest growing charity in less than ten years.

Picture Arrowhead Stadium, on any given Sunday, when the Kansas City Chiefs are playing at home. The parking lot opens at 7:30 a.m. and the myriad of cars begin to file in. It's time to tailgate! By 8:30 a.m. the grills are fired up and the meat is cooking. By noon, the stadium is packed with thousands of Chiefs fans.

Now, picture the sea of red that fills the arena. On Sunday, October 27th, Arrowhead Stadium welcomed the Cleveland Browns, with an attendance of 74,307. A little more than 74,000 strong. With a maximum capacity of 78,000, this is a lot of people in one place.

Every year, 220,000 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed. The attendance of three Chiefs home games is a little more than 220,000...enough to fill three Arrowhead Stadiums.

Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer in the U.S. claiming approximately 160,000 lives per year, accounting for 14% of all new cancer diagnoses and 27% of all cancer deaths. This leading cause of cancer death kills almost twice as many women as breast cancer, and almost three times as many men as prostate cancer...a devastating disease that can afflict anyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or smoking history.

About 60% of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or are former smokers.

Research spending and improved survival go hand in hand. Survival rates have dramatically improved for colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers over the last several decades along with the exponential growth in their research spending. We want to do the same for lung cancer, whose five-year survival rate is only 16%.

To date, LUNGevity-funded projects represent almost $16 million spent on 100 research projects at 56 institutions in 23 states. LUNGevity research investments focus on early detection, because the survival rate jumps when lung cancer is detected while still localized. We also focus on personalizing treatment approaches through biomarkers—getting the right treatment to the right patient at the right time. (see video)

Detecting lung cancer early is the best way to survive the disease. Unfortunately, because the disease is typically asymptomatic until it is in the late stages, early detection is uncommon. In fact, 79% of lung cancers are diagnosed once the tumor has spread beyond the original tumor site. This is unacceptable!

LUNGevity is taking steps to address this issue. They are funding research to quickly develop effective methods to detect lung cancer early, to find it, to treat it and more will live.
