Early breakfast in Baltimore County: Elmo's

If you have to wake up early -- I mean really early -- Elmo's in Upperco, Maryland starts serving breakfast at 5 am in the morning. They stop serving at 11:45 am and that's it. No lunch, no dinner, though they used to serve these meals in years past. They don't open on weekends. Sweeteners are sugar or the pink stuff. They don't take credit or debit cards, either. Lots of rules, but this is an old school, real deal diner-type restaurant.

Upperco is north of I-795 and many of Elmo's customers are farmers or laborers who have to get to where they're going early in the day. Upperco is quite rural and Elmo's is how traveling people ate before fast food chain restaurants took over other areas. Food is served in paper to-go containers.

They make their own hearty creamed chipped beef each day that you can get served over diced potatoes, toast or pancakes. They also have eggs made to order, omelettes, as well as their own savory sausage patties or scrapple or bacon.
