The Quarrymen, the band that evolved into the Beatles, played a couple of shows in Liverpool July 13, Donna Jackson of the British Beatles Fan Club tells us. They were playing as part of a competition that was run for up-and-coming bands by the website www.bobcom.com.

"The bands that won the competition got a trip to Liverpool, and a sort of recreation of the Magical Mystery Tour. They hired the Magical Mystery Tour bus, and took the bands around Liverpool, and filmed it all. One of the 'stops' was St. Peter’s Church Hall (where John Lennon and Paul McCartney met), and when they walked in, the Quarrymen were playing," she told us.

"I was helping out at St Peter’s, and (Quarryman) Len Garry was eating an apple," she said. "When he finished, he didn’t know what to do with the core because the bins are all outside. I took it from him to throw it away, which really amused me. There’s something kinda funny about being given an Apple by a Quarryman!"

In the evening the Quarrymen and the competition winners performed at the Cavern. She said they performed various songs, including "Come Go With Me" using the words that John made up on the day that Paul first saw the Quarrymen. Len Garry also performed an emotional version of "In My Life" as a tribute to John Lennon. Donna took a great shot of Garry in the same frame as the young Beatles that you can see in the slideshow.
