There’s nothing quite like summer in Boston. It’s the best time of year to take a nice stroll through the Public Garden or Boston Common, so we were thrilled to learn an Earl of Sandwich has opened right on the country’s oldest public park.
Things actually got a little tastier here in our fair city last fall when they opened up but this is the first summer in business. Based on the long lines we visited one recent sunny afternoon, we think they will be here for the long term.
The restaurant also recently expanded their hours to include breakfast sandwiches, bagels and muffins in addition to their popular selection of hot sandwiches. Order at the main stand and grab a table on the patio for some great al fresco dining.
We recommend the Original 1762 hot and tender roast beef, cheddar and horseradish sandwich on a freshly-baked artisan roll. The Italian was just as good filled with salami, capicola, roasted ham, mortadella, mozzarella, tomato and a side of Italian dressing for dipping. Pair it all up with a side of thick and creamy New England style clam chowder or a nice frozen lemonade and you will surely be satisfied.
For lighter fare, there is a nice selection of wraps, including a buffalo chicken, spicy tuna and Thai chicken with sweet chili sauce. We loved the Cobb salad, a tasty combination of field greens, grilled chicken, bacon, Swiss, sharp cheddar, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, cranberries and ranch dressing. The chicken Caesar salad with loaded with grilled chicken served atop a bed of Romaine lettuce, shaved Parmesan cheese, house made croutons and tangy Caesar dressing.
Don’t forget to get some sweets for the road. The oatmeal cookie was soft moist and loaded with raisins, just the way we like it. Chocolate lovers should not miss the super rich triple chocolate brownies.
