Eagles may interview McCoy while they still can

The Philadelphia Eagles have a few leaders in their head coaching search already, like Chip Kelly and perhaps Bill O’Brien. However, the Eagles may also be after another hot name who is actually in the NFL at the moment. According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora on Jan. 1, Philadelphia may meet with Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy while it still can.

McCoy’s Broncos won’t start preparing for the postseason until next week. Therefore, interested teams can talk with him this week, but can’t meet him again afterwards until Denver is eliminated. With the Broncos as the No. 1 seed in the AFC and a Super Bowl favorite, it could be another month until the Eagles and other teams can meet with McCoy again, so they are taking advantage now.

La Canfora alleges on Twitter that the Eagles will talk to McCoy this weekend, while the Arizona Cardinals and Chicago Bears are also planning to speak with him. It is more ironic that Arizona is meeting with him, given that former Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid is supposedly the leading candidate for that job.

Could the Eagles woo McCoy as their new coach, and leave the door more wide open for their old coach to join the Cardinals? It may be a long shot, however, given that Philadelphia may have more interest in the likes of Kelly and O’Brien. What’s more, the Eagles can actually keep talking to Kelly and O’Brien after this weekend, and will probably have to in order to beat out other teams for their service.

Yet McCoy’s work this past year with Peyton Manning can’t be ignored, and obviously hasn’t been. After Manning left the Colts and sat out 2011 with a neck injury, McCoy has helped bring him back to an MVP level in almost no time. That kind of offensive quick fix is just what the Eagles need -- and on the off chance they bring back Michael Vick, McCoy’s work with Tim Tebow in 2011 may help him blend in with Vick as well.

Time and other parties are a key factor if the Eagles want to snatch up Kelly, O’Brien or McCoy. But if Philadelphia is truly serious about McCoy, it has to make a snap decision after its weekend meeting with him. Yet considering how serious this search is, doing a rush job might not be the best option.
