Eagles hire Chip Kelly as head coach, unexpectedly leaves Oregon Ducks

Chip Kelly was hired as the Philadelphia Eagles head coach after an announcement just eight days ago that he would remain with the Oregon Ducks at the University of Oregon, ESPN reports Jan. 16.

The sudden decision came as a shock after Kelly interviewed with various NFL teams and it was he was remaining with the Ducks. Apparently the Eagles went through an exhausting search to hire a new head coach and Kelly wound up being their choice.

"Chip Kelly will be an outstanding head coach for the Eagles," owner Jeffrey Lurie said in statement. "He has a brilliant football mind. He motivates his team with his actions as well as his words. He will be a great leader for us and will bring a fresh, energetic approach to our team."

The Philadelphia Eagles will introduce Chip Kelly as the new coach at 1:30 p.m., ET Thursday in a press conference at the team's practice facility.

University of Oregon athletic director, Rob Mullens, gave a statement regarding Kelly's new coaching position with the Eagles.

"I want to thank Chip for his leadership and commitment to building on the Oregon Football foundation of excellence," Mullens said. "We have enjoyed incredible success over the past four years. I have great respect for Chip, consider him a friend and wish him the best of luck in the NFL.

"Oregon Athletics has executed two successful head coach transitions in the past eighteen years and each time we continued our ascent. We are focused on identifying a leader who is the right fit to guide Oregon Football."
