Eagles go from worst to first in NFC East, will face the Saints in playoffs

It was refreshing for a change to have the Eagles playing in a game which mattered. The game had the look and feel of a playoff game with both teams fighting for a chance to become the winners of the NFC East. In the end the Eagles beat the Cowboys 24 - 22 and will host the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the playoffs.

The Eagles won the opening coin toss but deferred to the Cowboys. Kyle Orton then took the football and marched the Cowboys down the field until Murray coughed up the ball into the arms of Bradley Fletcher.

The Murray fumble was one of two costly mistakes by the Cowboys, the second being an interception by Brian Boykin of a Kyle Orton pass which sealed the win for the Eagles.

The Cowboys have now lost to each of their division rivals with the NFC East on the line for the third straight year in a row, Two years ago they lost to the Giants in the last game of the year and in 2012 they lost to the Redskins.

It is the Eagles first playoff appearance since 2010 and after a year of going 4 -12 which helped lead to Andy Reid's firing the Eagles are going back to the playoffs. In his first year Chip Kelly has managed to quiet the critics who said his offence would never work in the NFL and won the NFC East with a team who many thought was a couple of years away from contending.

Sean McCoy who caught a 3 yard pass for a touchdown rushed for 131 yards and surpassed both Wilbert Montgomery for total rushing yards and Brian Westbrook for total all purpose yards from scrimmage. McCoy also won the NFL rushing title.

"With the stats and the records, none of that stuff means anything, if you don't win in the end," McCoy said according to ESPN. "That's the most important thing."

Nick Foles passed for 263 yards while completing 17 - 26 passes and one fumble. He ended the season with a 119.2 passer rating and is in contention for player of the year.

The Eagles led the whole game and went in at half time leading 17 - 10 lead thanks in part to to two Nick Foles touchdowns and a field goal by Alex Henry. It appeared the Eagles were on their way to a win. The problem was the Cowboys would not go away.

The Eagles started the third quarter with a quick three and out. The Cowboys then drove down the field and looked to be in a perfect position to tie the game but Boykin batted away a touchdown pass meant for Dez Bryant. the Cowboys kick a field goal to draw within four, Eagles lead 17- 13.

The game appears to be going the Cowboys way as Orton, who finished the game 30 - 46 and 358 yards ,connects on pass after pass. The Eagles get the ball back and need to score. After what amounted to a blown pass interference call by the refs Nick Foles drops back and is sacked and loses the ball. Dallas end us with good field position but the Eagles defense holds and Dallas settles for another field goal, Eagles lead 17 - 16.

After the Cowboys turn the ball over on downs in the fourth quarter, the Eagles then take the ball and score a touchdown on a Bryce Brown 6 yard run, Eagles lead 24 - 16 and appear to be in position to win the game until Dallas scores again when Billy Davis calls for an all out blitz on Orton and leaves a wide Dez Bryant who goes in for the score. Dallas then goes for a two point conversion but Carey Williams breaks up the pass, Eagles lead 24 - 22 and hold on to win the game.

On a night when the high flying Eagle's offense led by Nick Foles had some miscues the defense stepped up and helped the Eagles to a win. Next up is a Wild Card game with the Saints. Welcome back to the playoffs hopefully it will be a long run.
