A sea eagle in Australia latched onto a wildlife ranger’s video camera and recorded a birds-eye view of its travels including a selfie that has the curious bird pecking at the camera’s lens from atop a ledge.
The video camera that had been recording crocodiles in northwest Australia wound up filming intriguing footage of its 110-kilometer (70-mile) flight over the country's rugged terrain.
On Monday wildlife officials from the Kimberly region released video showing the eagle snatch the camera, wings flapping as it ascends with the device. Later, the eagle is seen in a “selfie” poking the camera lens with his beak, its eyes wide with curiosity.
In May Rangers placed the motion-sensor camera along the Margaret River in hopes of capturing images of crocodiles. The video device which includes audio is about 10 to 15 centimeters (4 to 6 inches) long and 5 centimeters (2 inches) wide. Officials say it disappeared not long after it was set up and that rangers assumed it fell into the river.
However wildlife officers recently learned that the camera was discovered 110 kilometers (70 miles) away near the Mary River, ranger Roneil Skeen told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. When they examined the video inside, the real culprit was revealed.
Skeen said the photogenic eagle with sticky claws had convinced the department to bolt their cameras down henceforth.
