Battlefront leading the charge to re-imagine relationship between games and Star Wars franchise.
Star Wars: Battlefront, the first announced title since EA acquired the SW license per - approval from Disney, will be the initial game to refresh the iconic franchise back into gaming, says EA - according to report by Polygon last night.
“The most important thing for me is that we take the Star Wars license and come up with games where peoples’ jaw drop,” said EA Games label Patrick Soderlund. “We need to do with this what [Batman: Arkham Asylum] did for the Batman license” Soderlund added.
Battlefront itself, is still in infancy. Battlefield studio - DICE will oversee development for the game, however, naturally - with the impending BF4 launch, “it’s going to take a while,” Soderlund noted. “We just announced the license and showed a sneak peak of Hoth. The Speeder and the AT-AT will be in the [game] for sure,” he assured. As if.
The original sequel, Star Wars: Battlefront 3, headed by TimeSplitters developer, Free Radical, was canceled citing disagreements between the studio and LucasArts executives.
Thankfully, moving forward, development for the new SWBF will include research on the work Free Radical did before its cancellation. “We didn’t toss anything out,” Soderlund affirms. “We’re looking at the old games. We have access to everything that was done during the LucasArts era. But we do want to take our own stance.”
We can only speculate to the potential of this new Star Wars: Battlefront game, but one thing’s for sure, there’s no one better suited for the task than DICE.
