EA issuing refunds for Battlefield 1943 PC; release date still unknown

The road to release for the PC version of Battlefield 1943 has been rife with mystery and uncertainty.

One of our most popular stories this month discussed the possibility of Battlefield 1943 finally seeing the light of day on PC, a full year after a successful console launch. The speculation was born from an email a reader received from EA customer service. Said reader had attempted to request a refund for their pre-order and was told by an EA representative that the game would be released on July 9th, 2010.

Despite the promise, July 9th has come and gone quietly, and the "Release Date TBD" on EA's Battlefield PC site only serves to make fans more anxious and irritated

We've had an interesting email dialog today with Taylor, one of our readers who preordered the title in March. Taylor was just given a no-questions-asked refund by EA Customer Service. The support representative confirmed over the phone that he did not have a release date for the game, and that it would be easier to simply issue a refund.

So, consider this a consumer alert: Battlefield 1943 on PC could end up being vaporware, and we now know that EA will issue a refund without argument. Please note we aren't advising everyone to do so, but merely presenting the option.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • EA's customer support line is 650-628-1001.
  • Digital River, Inc. merely handles EA's e-commerce, so contacting them for refunds isn't possible
  • Note that EA isn't issuing blanket refunds; you'll need to call the support line to request it.
  • We tried several times to reach EA for an official comment before publishing this story.
  • This article is by no means confirmation that the game has been cancelled...but it sure feels like it has.

UPDATE 1: VG247 has followed up on our story and was told by an EA representative: “All pre-orders can be canceled with refund at anytime and we do not have any further information at this time about a release date for the PC version of Battlefield 1943.”

UPDATE 2: An EA representative has now stated "Battlefield 1943 is not canceled, but we don't have any news about a release date at this time."

FEEDBACK: QUESTION: Will Battlefield 1943 ever be released on PC? Will you continue waiting?

LoL Nice Pic for the article!
I do believe they will get around to releasing it eventually.
Wish they could elaborate on the whole situation better.
Hope they are not pulling a 1vs100

^ 1 vs 100 is already gone, info released a few weeks ago. As for this game being vaporware on the PC, doubt it. EA is always, ALWAYs late for their launch titles. You just have to wait a month or two from the date they set.

These days its always PRE-ORDER now!!! even if they still need to make the game..or only have a trailer shows what the game its gonna look like.(and most of the time the trailers looks more impressive then the finished game)
Then people think yesss i am gonna pre-order that, that looks awesome.
Now they will make money on a game that doesnt even excist, and start making the game with pre ordered money.
Another sneaky thing is, You see awesome gameplay or a multiplayer mode in one of the first trailers, turns out when they realesed the game, the awesome things you saw in the trailer is gonna be in a downloadeble content wich you have to pay for. And also the games needs 20 updates and patches.
So in the future watch what you pre-order, wait till you see some good ingame footage!!!

ok bert, a month or two? seriously? initial releas was to be around the holiday season in '09, here we are it's facking august '10, let's be nice and say they weren't going to realeas until decemer so... jan, feb, march, april, may, june, july, august, counte 'em up over 7 months now we've been waiting, thank god I wasn't holding my breath....

@Bert you do know the original release date was in september 2009, then they actually admitted that the engine had to be "rebuilt" and said Q1 2010, that message was the last time they even rumored to it being released, since then, they haven't mentioned a single thing since 2009, i have held my preorder since august 2009, but, i could care less now, its obvious that they have more "important" things to put there time to.

    WOW nice read. Thanks.

Sadly I have seen this as vaporware for a very long time, it became so obvious early on.Ohh they say it will be released but do they really see just how silly they are making themselves look by this whole fiasco, the just need to end it for real and move on.

I, like many many others wanted this game but now have given up on it and EA/Dice.

On the plus side I learned NEVER PRE-ORDER!

Actually the Org. release date was June 2009 for all the systems (PS3, Xbox 360, And PC), but a week before the release they tried to quietly change the PC release date hoping no one would remember that they released a week earlier saying June 2009. So its not 7 months late, its not 11 months late, is 1 YEAR AND A MONTH LATE :O. I have no hopes for it ever coming out since EA/Dice's big reason was the did not have the frostbite engine ready for the PC and BFBC2 has been out for months now, so that kills that excuse. I was angry before, now I just don't care.

I'll continue waiting. I have other games I can play.

I'm not a huge gamer, but I was looking forward to a new Pacific War themed game, this is a really unfortunate event.

EA ruins games. Sad they treat the PC community this way, which built the BF franchise. Shame on DICE, you sold out.

None of them care. That is why a few friends and I had a EA games BBQ. Games on the grill MMMMMM tasty.

EA collects the money from pre-order. Puts it in the bank and invest with it, draw interest. They collect all that and a few months down the road gives a refund off a product they ditch but keep the interest drawn off it. I'm writing letters now to congress and the white house about this type of scam. In hopes of getting a bill passed that would force these people to not only refund the money but also interested or money made from the investment. 1943 for the PC is the BC2 add on pack (Vietnam) that is official. 1943 has been officially scraped. So they hope not everyone ask for a refund. Also, this could be grounds for a class action law suit to open the books and see how much they made off the consumers investments. Which in turn could force EA to pay that back to its pre-ordered customers. I am looking into all of this!

EA might as well officially stop making PC games. They've already stopped unofficially.
