E3 2010 - XBOX 360 Keynote

A day prior to the official opening of E3 here in Los Angeles, Microsoft had their keynote press conference where a number of huge announcements were made.

First off was the Call of Duty: Black Ops trailer which led to the announcement of the exclusive deal with Activision. For the next two years, all DLC will only be available on XBOX Live for Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Gears of War 3 made an appearance as well as Metal Gear Rising. Both look amazing. I'm absolutely looking forward to slicing up bodies in Metal Gear Rising!

Peter Molyneux shows off Fable III which will ship on October 26.

A mysterious Crytek title named Codename: Kingdoms is shown with not much explanation as to what it's about.

Halo Reach surprise announcement will feature vehicular space combat. Space Battles and Halo? Giddy-up!

Next, Microsoft showed off Kinect (Project Natal). Kinect aims to take the learning curve for gaming by making it as intuitive as possible. In addition, Microsoft has added ESPN to the fray joining Twitter, Facebook, Last.fm, and Netflix.

VideoKinect is a video conferencing feature which allows users to chat with friends and family via XBOX Live. It also supports videochat with Windows Live Messenger users as well. The camera is able to track your movements and keeps you in frame at all times. Very cool.

Coolness becomes cuteness in Kinectimals. A game that lets you interact with an animal of your choice. It also appears that players will be able to have a stuffed animal version (a la Webkinz).

This may not appeal to the hardcore gamer but seeing the girl on stage and playing hide and seek does a good job at pulling at the heartstrings a little.

The next batch of games target the casual market and include a fitness game, a collection of sports games and adventure games (sound familiar?)

It would be naive to think that these sorts of games wouldn't be available and it its useless to complain about it.

It's important to note that the XBOX 360 platform has it's fair share of hardcore titles and Kinect is clearly
aimed at the casual market. From the reactions I've been reading on the internet, it seems haters are going to hate no matter what. It will be interesting to see what kind of reaction Playstation Move will get tomorrow. In the end, it's the software that will determine sales numbers.

Lucasarts makes an unexpected appearance with a lightsaber game which looks like it could use some work. Those stormtroopers couldn't hit the broadside of a barn.

Best part of the evening would be the 360 SLIM announcement. Despite being leaked earlier this week, the actual announcement still managed to gain applause from the audience.

New XBOX 360 - 250GB, wi-fi built-in

To make things even sweeter, everyone in attendance walks away with the new 360!

It will be shipping to retail this week. In addition, Microsoft has mentioned that the Elite price will drop to $249, Arcade to $149, and the 360 "SLIM" will retail for $299.

According to EBGames in Saint John, NB, they are taking pre-orders with a $50.00 deposit and they are also taking 360 console trade-ins towards the new model.
