Tradina DeMary: Good Morning Terrence, your the Co Anchor for E! News, Actor and current Author of the new book The Wealth of My Mother’s Wisdom. Congratulations on the new book!
Terrance Jenkins: Thank you so much I really appreciate it, I’m super excited for people to read this book like you said it called The Wealth of My Mother’s Wisdom. It’s available for pre-order right now at Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com; you can get it in stores on October 1. And, it really shares a lot of valuable lessons that ‘my Mom’ taught me that; I think will be really inspirational to people out there that read it.
Tradina DeMary: Why did you decide to write the book?
Terrance Jenkins: My mom had me when she was 17 years old and she went through a lot. I was born on welfare, I have been through a lot of struggles in my life and when you turn on the television; see the guy on E! News. You don’t see any of that and so; I wanted to write a book for anybody that’s going through anything. For them to know there is light at the end of the tunnel. And, I think for me ‘my Mom’ was such an inspirational part of my life that; I wanted to share some of her pieces of wisdom. So that, they can possibly inspire other people to possibly chase after their dreams.
Tradina DeMary: What is the greatest lesson your mom actually taught you?
Terrance Jenkins: To never give up if I fall down ten times, she would tell me to get up eleven times and; I think that having that altitude if never giving up is what has helped me out so much in my career. For any gig that I’ve gotten there has been ten times that, I was told no. And so, I wanted to share these lessons with people so they won’t give up either.
Tradina DeMary: I know that you’re a part of the Disney Dreamers Academy and why did you decided to get involved in an organization like that?
Terrance Jenkins: I’ve been with the Disney Dreamers academy since year one, we are going in year seven and we are really proud of that. Steve Harvey and ESSENCE Magazine; we have all partnered with Disney to bring 100 young people down to Disney World Resort for an educational, motivational and fun filled weekend for 4 days in March 2014. So, the application deadline for that is October 31. So, I want to let everybody know you have to fill the application out right now. Come join us and have a good time.
Tradina DeMary: Who is eligible to apply for Disney Dreamers Academy?
Terrance Jenkins: Go to the website Disney Dreamers Academy.com; it has the age requirement, how to submit, it tells you about the essay, everything is all right there. Its super easy so, make sure to check it out. I think the best part of this application process is it’s not just for students that have straight A’s. You know, Steve is very adamant about the fact that, when he was in college he wasn’t a straight A student but, he still needed the nudge sometimes when you’re not a straight A student you need that nudge more than any one. This program is designed for students that are at the top of their class and for students that going through a hard time and it’s just such a great weekend because they all learn something from each other.
Tradina DeMary: Why is it important for you to inspire other people?
Terrance Jenkins: I think it’s all about paying it forward. I was inspired by people. I looked up to other people like Will Smith, Oprah Winfrey, Dick Clark and Michael Jordon. I always wanted to be like those people and I always wanted to be able to give back. I wanted some young person to look at me and my story and know they can do it as well.
Tradina DeMary: How could a program like Disney Dreamers Academy have helped you when you were in high school?
Terrance Jenkins: Oh my God, I wish I would have had Disney Dreamers Academy. If I had been in Disney Dreamers Academy, I would have been the youngest President of the United States by now. It’s such a fun weekend! Whatever you want to do there is something there for you. If you want to be a Chef, there is a world renowned Chef that there to teach you some of the tricks of the trade. If you want to be an Actor there are Actors that come down. We had several last year that will teach you how to break into the business, there is something for everyone. It’s just a lot of fun so; I think it’s definitely, definitely worth applying for.
Tradina DeMary: Well, thanks a lot for your time Terrance and once again congratulations on the new book.
Terrance Jenkins: Thanks you so much!
