Illinois was fortunate to have Zeke Giorgi elected to the House of Representatives, as a Democrat. He served for 25 yeas in the General Assembly and was always liked by both Democrats and Republicans. He was what we call a "common man" and did not have a law degree, or a background from that of a professional worker in industry. He was a strong former Union man that rose to the rank of a top politician.
Zeke went around the country to see what other states were doing to help generate revenue, instead of raising taxes for the people. He came up with the idea of a lottery for the State of Illinois. He lobbied and it passed, to create a lottery for everyone to play in hopes of winning the million dollar jackpot each week. People were happy that the lottery was created, and bought tickets each week until someone won.
Zeke Giorgi also said " This was a way to make workers millionaires. If you had the lucky winning ticket you won. The lottery is still very popular today. He also said that the proceeds would help fund the education for the State of Illinois, so that we would not have to raise the taxes. The State of Illinois has used the money generated to pay bills, and other needed essentials that are needed to run the State of Illinois's budget.
Zeke Giorgi has been deceased for about 20 years, and there has not been any representative that was as popular or gained as much respect as he did in the State of Illinois. He passed peacefully in his sleep. The State of Illinois building that sits on Rock River, downtown in Rockford is a tribute to him, as well as highways in the State.
