E.E. WADDELL H.S. needs signatures to prevent school closing

The only high school targeted for closure to expand the language school in Charlotte is seeking your help to remain open:

They site the following reasons to remain open:

• increased academic achievement since 2008

• recognized for High Growth during the 2009-10 school year
• reached 71 % Proficiency during 2009-10 school year, which dropped EEWHS from Judge Manning’s targeted list
• increased student attendance to 91% since 2008-2009 school year
• exceptional .science achievements for awards nationally and internationally; obtained over $250,000 in funding to maximize science education
• received a $3.6,000,000 grant (of which .3 million dollars are used for indirect cost by the district) to institute programs and services designed to increase the graduation rate and decrease the dropout rate
• received $87,000 renewable Title I funds to provide extra support personnel and tutors
• received $9,000 NFL donation to support academic needs of athletes
• received a $7,000 corporate donation to sponsor the First Annual E. E. Waddell High School Basketball Tournament in November 2010
• implemented a Freshman Academy in 2008-09 to ease the transition from middle school to high school and increase the likelihood of freshmen graduating from high school
• established two career academies (Arts, Architecture, & Design Academy and the Health Sciences & Biotechnology Academy) during the 2010-11

The students advise this is the one school where teachers take the time to help them and help them succeed. One student advised he attended another high school here in Charlotte, NC and "they just ignored him and kept about their day. However, he said at Waddell they make you feel like they care if you graduate."
