E. coli outbreak connected to raw clover sprouts

An E. coli outbreak that has affected people in several states has been connected to clover sprouts. The CDC reports on Tuesday that the most likely source of the outbreak is the Evergreen Fresh Sprouts company located in Idaho. Consumers are being encouraged to carefully consider their diets because an official recall has not been initiated.

Despite links to the outbreak, the Food and Drug Administration states that the products tested at Evergreen Fresh Sprouts did not show E.coli. The FDA is not issuing a recall at this time, but the CDC is discouraging people from eating raw clover sprouts. In a bulletin designed for consumers, the CDC shares that people should throw away their sprouts as a safety precaution.

The E.coli outbreak has reached five states and caused 17 people to become ill, but the cases have come from restaurants. The CDC believes the Evergreen Fresh Sprouts company supplied the restaurants with the clover sprouts. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration has uncovered several code violations at the facility that included rust and corrosion.

Honey Sayler became sick after eating an item with sprouts from Jimmy John’s, and she has filed a lawsuit against both the restaurant and Evergreen Fresh Sprouts. It took six days for Sayler to show symptoms of an E.coli infection after eating at Jimmy John’s, and this is considered within the guidelines for showing symptoms of the disease. The woman had to be hospitalized for treatment, but she has made a recovery.

Jimmy John’s was one of several restaurants linked to the outbreak, and the other two included Pita Pit and Daanen’s Deli. In general, the CDC recommends that anyone with an immune deficiency not eat raw sprouts, and it is advising everyone to avoid the clover sprouts from the company linked to the outbreak. Sprouts have been associated with previous outbreaks from other companies and restaurants.
