Fans of Veronica Roth’s popular young adult novel Divergent are enthusiastically awaiting the release of the book big screen adaptation. This futuristic adventure/drama takes place in a disturbingly segregated world in which people are categorized based on their personality types and divided into distinct factions. Tris Prior, who does not easily fit into any one category is labeled divergent, something that puts much more than just her social life at risk. In this world failure to fit in is completely unacceptable. Things get worse for Tris when it becomes apparent that there is a conspiracy to do away with divergents. Tris is in a race against time to uncover what is so dangerous about being divergent.
Starring in this dystopian thriller is Shailene Woodley, most recently known for her leading role on the TV series The Secret Life of the American Teenager. The cast also features Theo James (Underworld: Awakening), the prodigious Zoë Kravitz (X-Men First Class) who is also the daughter of musician Lenny Kravitz; along with such notables as Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd and Scandal’s Tony Goldwyn.
Helming the film is Neil Burger, best known for directing and writing major films The Lucky Ones and The Illusionist. The screenplay was penned by Evan Dougherty (Killing Season) and Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones).
Beyond the action and adventure, at the heart of the film’s basic premise is the relatable desire to be a unique individual and the conflict of whether or not to conform to society’s expectations. Tris, described as brave and idealistic, faces a heart-wrenching decision of choosing between her family and a chance for self-discovery.
There are four books in the Divergent series. If this film is a success moviegoers may be in for another teen franchise.
Divergent will be released in both 2D and Imax theaters on March 21, 2014.
