Few were surprised today when the first stage of the re-entry draft went by in roughly five minutes with only two teams making selections. The Houston Dynamo was one of the teams choosing to bypass selecting any players. While the Dynamo was not active in adding anyone they did see some roster change. Joseph Ngwenya, who few expected to be back with the club in 2011, was taken first by D.C. United confirming that he will not be back with Houston in 2011.
Ngwenya gave the Dynamo an initial spark when he rejoined the club last summer but quickly faded to the bench after a run of tough form. The trade for Jason Garey was a sign that the Dynamo was going to go in a different direction at forward. Aaron Hohlbein was the only other player taken in the draft by Columbus.
The conventional wisdom in the first stage of the draft was to pass on selecting a player unless you were sure that they would be targeted by another team. Clearly the Dynamo did not feel it was necessary to take a flyer on paying a player’s full option in 2011 but could still target a player in next week’s stage 2 where a team can select a player and sign them to a new contract. In the mean time the players available have another week to negotiate a contract with their former club.
