Rookie forward Mark Sherrod is signed, sealed and one of six forwards on the 2014 Houston Dynamo roster that begins play in their quest for another MLS Cup title on Saturday night (March 8, 2014) at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Sherrod, the Dynamo's second round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft scored 42 goals in in four seasons at the University of Memphis. At 6'3" the former Tiger was a scoring machine finishing third in team history in scoring (42) and total points (96).
The Knoxville, Tennessee native was expected to go to the Portland Timbers at pick 36 of the draft but that was before Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear saw Sherrod at the MLS Combine.
"He is doing exactly here what he did at the combine," said Kinnear. We had never seen him before that and he was up there on his own quite a lot at that low forward and he just chased everything down," continued Kinnear. On free kicks he was goal dangerous, he held the ball up the ball pretty good but his attitude was the one thing we all talked about.
Sherrod is a a big bodied forward with a strong work ethic who is as comfortable banging in the air for a ball as much he enjoys rifling a shot past the keeper has not disappointed this preseason.
"They like big up front," said Sherrod who trying to be a protégé of Will Bbruin. ".Him and Giles are teaching me so much, it's amazing."
Although Sherrod admits he is still adjusting to the pace of the game, there is little doubt the Dynamo have found another scoring threat for the front line.
