Houston Dynamo got their first win of the Carolina Challenge Cup as they defeated Vancouver 2-1 at Blackbaud Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Whitecaps started well and could well have taken the lead in the 17th minute as Russell Teibert's shot from the edge of the area came off the post allowing Tally Hall to get on the rebound.
Ten minutes later a Houston error allowed Vancouver to open the scoring as a poor back-pass was stolen by Corey Hertzog who ran to the byline and easily finished from a tight angle.
Right before the break Alex Dixon created Houston's best chance of the match thus far when he cut in from the left and sent in a powerful shot that just cleared the crossbar.
Vancouver again impressed in the second half but some solid defending kept them out. Dynamo's defense impressed further when they managed to keep four straight corners out to stay in the match.
Dynamo then went to the bench bringing in regulars Will Bruin, Brad Davis and Adam Moffat which saw Houston take the advantage on offense.
Two minutes after those changes Houston equalized as Davis lifted a ball over the Vancouver defense for Bruin who controlled with his first touch and then slid the ball under the keeper.
Houston hit the lead in the 77th minute as Brian Ching controlled the ball and squared for Moffat who took one touch before launching a powerful strike from 40 yards that found the back of the net.
Houston's defense continued to impress as they held off Vancouver for the 2-1 victory.
