“It’s a program designed for ages two, three and four,” William says. “You’re teaching them [kids] sight words. You’re teaching them meanings of words, and so there has to be a learning component that goes right along with it, right along with the spiritual and the biblical component. So I was thinking, well, why can’t we teach them biblical words?” They pull out key words from whatever Bible story is being taught that day and teach the kids using professional videos that are shot on a regular basis for this purpose. Words like miracle, courage and prayer, for example. All the videos are humorous while imparting a lesson about God. Click here to look at some. “Preschoolers learn in about four minute increments,” he explains. “So you’ve got be changing something. A song, then we sit down and do this; then it’s a video. So there’s always that variety going on.”
This fall new characters will be added to the show. Approximately eight new puppets, so kids who are familiar with last year’s shows will see some new faces. What’s even more fun is that each and every puppet has a quirk designed to add humor to each show. A new arrival, Charlie, has a hard time staying awake. So he’ll fall asleep and snore mid lesson, only to awaken and resume where he left off. Lessons are also taught using motion, which, according to William, helps kids to learn even better. Whatever is highlighted during the show is reinforced in the classroom. Rachel Thompson writes the classroom curriculum.
If you decide to bring your kids on a Sunday morning, they will enjoy a 25-minute show and have 25 minutes in the classroom. Feel free to stay and watch the show yourself so you can see what your kids will be doing. Then, take a few moments to meet the creative team behind it all. The first fall show will be Sunday, Aug. 18. For more information on show times for Preschool Playhouse Live, call 954.389.4555.
