Dylan starts tour with surprises

Bob Dylan started his fall tour last night with an intimate show at the Moore Theatre in Seattle with a few surprises.

First of all, as previously reported, Charlie Sexton is back with the band. The current line-up is Bob Dylan (keyboard, guitar, harp), Stu Kimball (guitar), Charlie Sexton (guitar), Tony Garnier (bass), George Recile (drums), and Donnie Herron (miscellaneous instruments including banjo, electric mandolin, pedal steel, lap steel, trumpet). Denny Freeman is no longer in the band.

No songs were played from Dylan’s upcoming holiday album, “Christmas In The Heart”,  which was not surprising. It is not even clear if Dylan will play any songs from the album when the album is released next week.

Dylan concentrated on fairly recent material. Only five of the 16 songs performed were from the 1960’s. The opening song, 1979’s “Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking”, was last performed live in 1980, although it was rehearsed with the Grateful Dead in June, 1987.

Speaking of changing, Dylan mixed up the guitar / keyboard / vocals-only pacing of the show. On the last tour, Dylan usually opened up on guitar, then switched over to keyboards for the rest of the set. Dylan occasionally would sing from center stage without guitar or keyboard. Last night’s show featured six songs with Dylan center stage, and Dylan returned to guitar mid-set.

Here’s the  set list  compiled from various sources:
