Dylan's back pages - May 14, 1966, The Odeon, Liverpool

(Sony)

On May 14, 1966, Bob Dylan and The Hawks played a concert at the Odeon, in Liverpool, England, hometown of The Beatles. It was part of Dylan's legendary - and controversial - first electric world tour.

Many of the shows from the tour were professionally recorded for a proposed live album. However, the only release from this tour at the time was "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues", taken from this concert. For years, it could only be found on the b-side of the 1966 seven-inch single, "I Want You".   This live version has since appeared on various compilations, mostly originating in Japan and Australia.

In 2005, The Band released a box set retrospective called A Musical History.  The 5 CD / 1 DVD collection featured a handful of tracks recorded with Bob Dylan, including two songs from the Liverpool Odeon concert. One was "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues", the other was "Tell Me, Momma".

Bob Dylan (vocal, harmonica, electric guitar), Robbie Robertson (electric guitar), Garth Hudson (organ), Rick Danko (bass, backing vocal), Richard Manuel (piano), Mickey Jones (drums).

I was at the concert in Liverpool on the next to back row in the stalls. At the end of the acoustic set someone behind me said to his friend "He got all the emphasis wrong in Tambourine Man."
Great to see Tell Me Momma. My abiding memory is of Rick Danko ducking and weaving (like John Conte).

One Too Many Mornings from Liverpool is available on Youtube and was shown in Scorsese's No Direction Home.

A year or two ago North West Tonight, a local news programme in the north west of England, reconstructed the photo of Dylan with a group of children in a doorway and interviewed some of those in the shot.

    To Robbie -
Unfortunately, both of those videos were withdrawn from You Tube at the time this article was posted. I was in contact with the person who made the documentary, and was hoping to have him comment on it, but without the footage it didn't seem like it would have as much interest to Examiner readers. The documentary was fascinating, it's a shame I could not post it here.
Thanks for you comments, and for sharing your memories of the show !
