Enno the German Shepherd is a K9 at the Hoquiam Police Department who has worked for nearly eight years with his partner, Sergeant Jeff Salstrom, to protect and serve the community.
Police dogs are invaluable assets to any police force - they are partners, pets, friends, and family. The partnership between Sergeant Salstrom and Enno is based on trust, commitment, and friendship - and Enno has been a hero many times over.
Today is Enno's tenth birthday - a landmark that the beautiful German Shepherd likely made due to the support of readers and animal lovers worldwide.
When this devoted police dog was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor located behind his eye, private citizens Troy and Jennifer Osiadacz went into action. Along with some of their close friends, they raised funds to pay for the cancer treatments to help relieve Enno's pain and hopefully extend his life.
Along with raising funds, they raised spirits, as well - granting one hometown hero the gift of just one more birthday with his family.
Today on the Helping Hoquiam's K9 Enno Facebook page, Sergeant Salstrom stated:
"Hi all! This is Jeff, Enno's partner. Today is Enno's 10th Birthday! Thanks you all of your help and support, we made it. Enno had a good Christmas with the family.
Unfortunately over the New Year, his cancer rapidly spread. I wasn't sure he was going to make it to today, but after his treatment last Thursday, he seems to be doing a little better.
It is apparent he only has a very short time left, but he is a fighter. He spends a lot of time laying on the couch but he still has a good appetite and likes going on short walks. Again, thank you to everyone for your support, particularly Troy and Jen.
I also want to give thanks to Dr. Lisa Parshley at the Olympia Veterinary Cancer Center. She came to us with an offer to help and some unique ideas which have given us more time together.
I also want to give a big thanks to my beautiful wife, Jessica, for supporting us and taking care of Enno when I'm working."
Thank you, Enno, for your service to the community. And thank you to those who supported this police dog as he faced his toughest adversary.
