Dwyane Johnson to take over lead in 'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island'

If you were bummed to hear that Brendan Fraser won’t be returning for the sequel to “Journey to the Center of the Earth” because of scheduling issues, good news awaits. Dwayne Johnson is now joining the cast of “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” as the boyfriend of explorer Sean Anderson’s mom, who Anderson (played by Josh Hutcherson) will be forced to bring on “a trip to a mythical and monstrous island to find his missing grandfather.” Johnson, as the lead, will be one of four new characters in the sequel.

Shooting is scheduled to being in late October in North Carolina and Hawaii and it will, of course, be filmed in 3D. More casting news is expected this month as director Brad Peyton (Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore) prepares to shoot the script inspired by Jules Verne’s “Mysterious Island.”

“Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” is set to be released September 23, 2011.
